When should I come to the Assessment Centre?

  • First, determine if you require a COVID-19 test by completing a Self-Assessment.
  • Do not seek testing at multiple COVID-19 assessment centres as this will result in delayed access and delayed test results for all.  If you have already booked an appointment at an assessment centre and can no longer make it, please cancel and rebook your time so others who need a test can be seen.

Low risk, asymptomatic individuals will NOT be considered for COVID-19 testing unless for a long term care visit or medical procedure as per the updated guidance from the Ministry of Health

Ontarians are being asked to visit an Assessment Centre ONLY if they:

  • Individuals with symptoms of COVID-19
  • Direct contacts of confirmed cases identified as:
    • A household contact
    • Directed or recommended by public health via contact tracing or outbreak investifation
    • Notified via the COVID alert app

In addition, the following groups are eligible for testing at assessment centres regardless of the presence of symptoms, Currently, these are:

  • Workers in long term care homes every two weeks.  Workers in long term care home should not be tested more frequently than every two weeks unless directed by public health in an outbreak setting.
  • Essential caregivers visiting long term care homes
  • Residents or workers in homeless shelters, or other congregate settings.  A list of congregate settings is outlines in guidance from the Ministry of Health.
  • Pre-operative patients prior to receiving general anesthesia and cancer patients receiving therapy outlines in guidance from the Ministry of Health.
  • International students who have passed their 14-day quarantine period, or who have developed symptoms within their 14-day period
  • Farm workers
  • Indigenous communities
  • Individuals who need testing for international travel clearance (note: this is an interim measure.  Please check Ontario.ca/covidtest to ensure you have the most current information).

Frequently Asked Questions about the COVID-19 Assesment Centre

Visitors:

Visiting restrictions have been put in place in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.  These restrictions will be relaxed in a careful and gradual way starting with visiting for admitted patients.

Visitation will expand to include one (1) designated visitor per day for acute inpatients.

At this time, visitor restrictions remain in place for the Emergency Department, Diagnostic Imaging, Laboratory and Surgical Services, unless the patient is a child or requires a support person.

Some exceptions to this may be made for compassionate reasons (e.g. obstetrics, intensive care or palliative patients or a parent escorting their child to the Emergency Department).  If an exception is made, only one (1) visitor per patient will be permitted.

This it to protect the safety of our patients, physicians and staff and we will continue to evaluate the situation.

The front entrance continues to be closed.  All patients must enter through the Emergency Department entrance.

As a COVID-19 precaution, upon arrival, you will be screened before entering the building and will be asked to clean your hands.  You may also be asked to put on a mask.

Reduction of Services:

To limit the number of people entering our building, and reducing services so we can focus our resources, we will be introducing a number of service reductions:

  • Some Outpatient clinics have been reintroduced witch changes made to appointment spacing.
  • Dialysis patients will continue to receive treatments.
  • All surgeries will now continue. Drs Kieffer and Duque will continue to see patients in their offices.
  • All Laboratory services will continue.
  • Diagnostic Imaging services will continue.

Out gift shop will remain closed, and all of our auxiliary volunteers will be staying home for now.

Donations of Personal Protectice Equipment (PPE)

Like many other hospitals, HDH is asking the public for donations of PPE.  If you can support our healthcare workers in preparation for increased cases of COVID-19, we are asking for the following new, unused supplies:

  • Masks - surgical and N95
  • Disposable isolation gowns
  • Gloves - Examination or surgeons gloves (Vinyl/Nitrile)
  • Safety goggles
  • Face shields

Please email info@hdhospital.ca to arrange delivery/pickup for these items.  Thank you to the community members that have already been reaching out to help.
